Review of Elevate: A Song of Hope
People have diverse methods of conveying their previous experiences and emotions. Certain individuals choose to articulate them through storytelling, others through song, and some through the composition of poems. Within this book, the author endeavors to share fragments of their personal history, encompassing themes of love, life's trials, moments of joy, and instances of sorrow, all expressed through beautiful and intriguing poems.
Elevate, written by Aaron S. Holt, is a captivating book featuring 55 heartfelt poems exploring love, peace, human experiences, and war themes. These poems are thoughtfully organized into four distinct sections: "Hearts," "Love," "Life," and "Soul." Within the "Hearts" section, the author delves into a poignant recollection of a past love experience through a poem called "Spring." This evocative piece draws tears akin to the gentle rain of spring, reminding readers that even amidst moments of joy, our past events remain intertwined with our emotions. Another poem within this section is centered on Mugendai, where the author employs Doyen Haiku as an example to elucidate the significance of finding inspiration in nature. It emphasizes the importance of persevering through challenges. By referencing a Jewish bride, the author presents a poem that encapsulates the unpredictable spirit of love, depicting a relationship fraught with betrayal and jealousy. This composition encourages readers to recognize the significance of being prepared for the complexities that love can bring. Moving into the "Love" section, the author presents a poem titled "Pets," which imparts valuable lessons about appreciating the uniqueness of various animals. Each creature, whether a frog or a leopard, possesses distinct ways of reacting to different activities. To explore the remaining 51 poems in the book, readers can delve into the 77 captivating pages of this literary masterpiece.
I enjoyed some aspects of the book. One thing I particularly appreciated was how the author utilized each poem within its pages as a means of imparting valuable life lessons to readers. For example, a poem titled "Pets" emphasized the significance of recognizing and appreciating the unique qualities of various animals. Additionally, the poem "The Beautiful Serpent" on page 8 reminds us that we should not solely rely on appearances, as things that may seem beautiful at first glance can sometimes conceal hidden dangers. Moreover, I found the table of contents in the book to be exceptionally well-crafted. It conveniently listed all 55 poem titles, allowing readers to quickly navigate to their desired page with a simple tap. This feature greatly facilitated the process of locating specific poems within the book.
Some aspects of the book did not resonate with me. I struggled to grasp the meaning of some poems within it due to the author's incorporation of highly complex vocabulary. For example, on page 34, the author employed the word "floccinaucinihilipilificated." It would have been preferable for the author to use more straightforward language that readers could easily comprehend while reading, as it often required multiple readings of a poem to fully grasp its intended message.
The poem that resonated with me the most was "Glades," as it imparts a valuable lesson about seeking solace amidst adversity. I found no errors in the book, so it is extraordinarily well-edited. Due to the aspects of the book that did not resonate with me, I rate it 4 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to poetry enthusiasts seeking a collection of poems that delve into themes of love, peace, and war.
