"Sent to Watch" by David Lebenstein is a remarkable science fiction narrative that takes readers on an extraordinary journey through time and space. This gripping tale immerses us in the world of interplanetary travel and intrigue, set against the backdrop of the historic Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

One of the standout qualities of this book is how the author seamlessly weaves factual historical events into the science fiction narrative. By doing so, Lebenstein not only provides a fresh perspective on history but also highlights the cultural and political dynamics of the time. The representation of the tensions between Protestants and Catholics and the injustices suffered by the Irish under English Protestant rule adds depth and relevance to the story.

The science fiction elements of the book are equally captivating. The concept of emissaries from a confederation of alien planets collecting intelligence on other civilizations' advancements is thought-provoking. The book explores the idea of determining future events through probabilistic simulations and even delves into the creation of artificial gravity through centrifugal force, making for a scientifically intriguing and imaginative read.

While the book has many strengths, including originality and well-thought-out concepts, it could benefit from a slightly smoother pacing in some parts. The narrative occasionally feels fast-paced, and there are a few extra line spaces that don't contain any content. Nevertheless, these minor issues do not diminish the overall enjoyment of the story.

"Sent to Watch" deserves a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It is a professionally edited work with few errors, which enhances the reading experience. I highly recommend this book to both science fiction enthusiasts and those who appreciate historical narratives with a unique twist. It offers a captivating blend of history, science, and romance, making it a must-read for anyone seeking an original and intellectually stimulating adventure. David Lebenstein has crafted a captivating world that will leave readers eagerly anticipating his future works.
