We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies was a joy to read. The author is very articulate of the world of fantasy involving castles, mages, war and citizens. There was a small amount of profanity. I did not see any grammatical errors.
This was a good piece of work. The imagery of medieval life and politics follow the protagonists as they become acquainted in a new adventure. The antagonists are well developed and very frightening. There are several plots in the story that lead into the next book. The terminology goes into fictional history of king lineage, different types of mages, magical powers, and inventions of Voulhire. Each individual has their own mysterious story that could stand alone.
The right mixture of detail and colorful conflicts made an exciting climax. The lightheartedness contrasts with many psychologically disturbing elements of war, death, and famine. Most of the women are dutiful servants. Maybe in the future something more will be made of the roles of women and overlooked people of society. A few of the characters are apparently gay and there is mention of child abuse. Although innocent, this lord of the castle is thrown to the wolves when there is an opportunity.
I gave this a five out of five star rating. The audience is clearly meant for young adults and older due to the mild profanity and violence. The writer is clearly capable of creating original parts and insights. It is easy to relate to as an adventure novel and could transition into a role playing computer game. I hope to see more of his work.
