We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz marks the start of an epic seven-book series, offering readers a captivating journey into the fictional realm of Voulhire. Set against the backdrop of a kingdom flourishing in wealth, culture, and technology, the narrative unveils a world teeming with promises, where faith, science, and magic vie for supremacy, each presenting a distinct identity for those grappling with uncertainties.

The narrative unfolds with the arrival of Galen Bray, a youthful immigrant hailing from the war-ravaged Land of the Princes, whose journey to Voulhire is set in motion by the bequest from his great uncle. The storytelling skillfully hints at the intricate layers and profound complexity that define Galen's character, leaving readers anticipative of the revelations yet to surface. As Galen navigates this unfamiliar terrain, the tale introduces the bonds he forges, notably with Rowan, his great uncle's executor.

In tandem with Galen's narrative, the plot intertwines with that of Lord Eldus and his family, embarking on a relocation to Hillport. Entrusted with the duty of supplanting the notorious former Lords Orlin and Meldorath, their story unravels against the backdrop of inherited responsibilities and the intrigue of the enigmatic past. The sovereign ruler of Voulhire also makes a significant appearance, adding a regal dimension to the unfolding events. The narrative introduces a faction of rebels known as Riva Rohavi, casting a shadow of turmoil over the kingdom.

Intriguingly, the narrative raises questions regarding the morality of the previous Lords of Hillport. Initial perceptions of them as villains undergo scrutiny, prompting contemplation on whether there is more beneath the surface than initially perceived. As the plot thickens, the tale weaves a tapestry of interconnected characters and unfolding mysteries, beckoning readers into a realm where alliances, loyalties, and the truth itself are subject to scrutiny and revelation.

Tysz skillfully weaves a narrative that unfolds like a kaleidoscope, each turn shedding light on a new facet of the tale. The exploration of characters in this inaugural instalment sets the stage for a sprawling epic, leaving readers with mere glimpses of the rich tapestry awaiting them.

The novel's strength lies in its original and expansive concept, promising a multiverse story that takes its time to meticulously build characters and the world they inhabit. Tysz employs a deliberate, slow-build approach that captivates readers, gradually intensifying the anticipation towards an exciting climax.

The author's writing style stands out, characterized by its uniqueness and impressiveness. The narrative is expertly crafted, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the alternate universe of Voulhire. The infusion of essential fantasy elements is seamlessly executed, contributing to a balanced and efficient storytelling experience.

While the concept and execution receive praise, the multitude of points of view and subplots in the initial book might challenge some readers in forming connections with the main characters. Despite this, the narrative is professionally edited, free from distractions that could detract from the immersive experience.

We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies offers an original and magnificent entry into the fantasy genre. The author's careful attention to detail, unique writing style, and gradual world-building make this a compelling read. With a few reservations regarding the abundance of perspectives, the novel earns a solid 4 out of 4 stars, recommended for advanced fantasy readers and beginners alike, providing an opportunity for the latter to enhance their comprehension levels. Tysz's debut in this series sets a promising foundation for the expansive adventures yet to unfold in the realms of Voulhire.
