This is an intriguing love story, I would love to know if Sandrine attention was later gotten by Marker and how they were able to work together despite Marker's feelings for her.

"The Hotel Detective and his Lover" by Derek Picot is an exhilarating journey that unfolds within the luxurious confines of London's Adelphi Hotel during the Swinging Sixties. The hotel, facing a hostile takeover bid, becomes a symbol of tradition and prestige. Sir John Bulling, its Chairman, reluctantly succumbs to kidnappers' demands, setting off a series of events that intertwine the fate of the hotel with the lives of its diverse cast of characters.

In this ensemble of vibrant personalities, each driven by their own motives, the plot weaves a tapestry of ambition, secrets, and self-interest. Sir John, with a shadowy past, grapples with the complexities of maintaining authority. His son Andrew, fueled by a desire for financial gain, forms alliances that jeopardize the hotel's future. Assistant General Manager George Brooks embodies ruthless ambition. As the narrative unfolds, justice prevails, and every character receives their just desserts.

Richard Marker, the hotel detective, injects a sense of realism and humor into the story. Bearing similarities to Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe, Marker is not only captivated by the hotel's culinary delights but also entangled in an unexpected romance with Sandrine Parte, the French Public Relations Officer. Despite his quirks, Marker remains a vigilant guardian, navigating the complexities that threaten the hotel's operations. Surprisingly, he emerges as the one character who embodies generosity as the novel concludes.

Derek Picot skillfully navigates both plot and character development. Shifting perspectives among characters infuse suspense into the narrative, keeping readers engrossed in the multifaceted storyline. The novel provides an intimate look behind the scenes of a luxury hotel, with mysteries surrounding Cynthia's death and the resolution of Andrew's kidnapping adding layers of intrigue.

"The Hotel Detective and his Lover" is, at its core, a captivating tale of atmosphere. It introduces readers to a colorful array of characters and unfolds against a backdrop of striking scenes. The book seamlessly combines mystery, suspense, and the allure of a luxurious setting, making it a delightful read for those who appreciate murder mysteries and intricately woven narratives.

A well-detailed description of the location of actions with vivid pictures from the author, romance, and some humour already convinced me this is a great book with aspects I love in a book. Richard Marker has to do more to win Sandrine Parte. Thank you for an insightful and well-written review.

At one point in time, the novel "Hotel" by Arthur Hailey was my favorite book, because I greatly enjoyed the atmosphere created by the author, the feeling of a closed-tied community in a world of their own. Reading this review reminded me of all those almost forgotten memories and I will gladly delve again in this world to find out what will happen with the love triangle. Thanks for the recommendation and congrats on BOTD!

This sounds like such a good read. The reviewer revealed just enough to make me curious but gave no spoilers whatsoever. What I am guessing is that the book contains the tea of customers at the hotel and other interesting things. Besides, the review mentions burglary, kidnapping and so on. Congratulations to the author for BOTD and best wishes for future projects.

You did a great review of this book. Thank you. The fact that this thriller had you turn all 500 pages with interest tells me that this was a good book to read. I read the sample on Amazon and it captured my attention immediately. The author has a vividness to his writing. You were correct in giving it 3 out of 4 stars due to the editing mistakes. But I now see that the book has been re-edited. The author must have appreciated your comments. Because of your excellent review, I am adding this book to my bookshelves. :techie-studyinggray:
