Review of A Perfect Stargazing Night
"A Perfect Stargazing Night" by Laurel Gurnsey is the second book in a series called “The Butterfly Trilogy.” The story follows Beth Duncan as she makes the chilling discovery of a dead body in the closet of her cottage in Cornwall, England. She doesn’t know the dead man, and she is terrified because she doesn’t know why the killer or killers chose her cottage to stash the dead body. She also doesn’t know if the killer or killers might come back to harm her. Beth calls the police, and she quickly realizes that the cottage that has been her peaceful sanctuary will never feel the same again.
Beth’s friend, Sam Matthews, is supposed to stop by her cottage to deliver some paperwork. Sam is a detective from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Scotland Yard. He is not just a skilled investigator but a long-time friend of Beth's who harbors feelings for her. When Sam arrives that afternoon, Beth’s stoic demeanor crumples. She is grateful for Sam’s calm presence as she speaks with the police. Beth’s feelings for Sam deepen quickly, and Sam feels the same. Beth is determined to solve the mystery of the man who died in her cottage, even as she is warned by Sam and the police to stay out of it.
I enjoyed reading this book. The author did an excellent job of character development, helping readers to get to know both Beth and Sam as individuals. Beth’s tenacity helps to keep the case from going cold, even as it puts her own life in danger. The killer or killers don’t want her to find them, and they will do just about anything to keep her from doing so. The author writes the narrative in a vivid way that keeps readers guessing and includes a few unexpected twists and turns.
There is not much I would change about this book. Although it is the second book in a series, the story stands alone, allowing readers to pick it up and read it without having read the first book. That said, having read both books myself, I believe readers would enjoy the first book in this series as well. “A Perfect Stargazing Night” seems as if it has been professionally edited; I found very few errors in the text.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. “A Perfect Stargazing Night” is a compelling mystery with a well-crafted plot, authentic characters, and a good amount of romance. I found nothing negative to say about the story or the editing of the text. Readers who enjoy mysteries and romance will enjoy this book. The author wrote a book that successfully includes both genres. This book will also appeal to readers who have traveled to Cornwall or who hope to travel there. The author describes the area with a nice amount of detail.
