Do You Choose Video Games Like Books?

Post by McAlpine »

Do you choose which video games to play like you choose which books to read? Do you consider the inherent qualities of video games like the inherent qualities of books?

I particularly like to play XBox 360 video games that are rated 'M' for mature. I particularly like to read thrillers, too. I bought my 'M' video games like I bought my thrillers. In both cases, I looked for the best characters and plots. I wanted to experience uncommon situations and feel the excitement of the dynamics of societies. I wanted to follow smart characters through plots that exposed difficult times.

Of course, there are differences between video games and books. Video games are more graphic, and express actions better. They have a natural pace that draws players in. Books are more intelligent, and express thoughts better. They have plots that build dramatically and unfold into climaxes. Games are more sensory, and books are more intellectual.

What do you think about video games and books? Do you choose them in the same way?

When it comes to choosing games, I actually prefer to prioritize gameplay first. IMO, if the game isn't enjoyable when playing it, then I can't enjoy the story. If it has a bad story, at least I can skip that/not pay attention and enjoy the gameplay. But if the gameplay is bad, then entire sections of the game just become unplayable... and, well, it's not fun. As a result, a lot of games I play tend to have generally simple plot lines, with really good and enjoyable gameplay.

But occasionally you do find games that are really good at using gameplay to storytell, and using storytelling to create gameplay. OMORI and Hades, for example, are really good at combining the two elements, and make a game whose story is also enjoyable.

So to answer the question straight up– no, I don't, because I have different goals in choosing a game and choosing a novel, but the way I choose games does occasionally lead me to the goldmine of great stories with great immersion.

Although these are completely different matters when it comes to choosing them the same way. I look for a kind of adventurous game for playing, with an interesting story usually they have a mission or a story to follow. When it comes to reading books, I just choose anything which is helpful and something new is better. So I don't choose them the same way. Some games are even recommended by other friends and that's why it differs to me.

I do not like video games. At the most will play just to be able to spend time with my niece and daughter.

I feel like a lot of people who grow up with Japanese RPGs are more likely to become readers of fantasy, mythology, etc. books. That was my case at least. Beyond that it's more subtle things, such as being in the mood for something lighthearted whether it's a book or game.

I think its all based on personal preference really. I mean I know what I like when it comes to what books i want to read, what games I enjoy playing etc etc. In gaming I didnt realise that the majority of games that attracted me were either based on an anime story or became an anime story but what I did know was that I loved mmorpg's and that was because I enjoy playing with other players in the world. The only thing I dont like about this is that sometimes it comes with toxic people. But just so you know, not all mmorpg's have toxic people on them.

Choosing video games and books often involves seeking captivating characters and plots. Both offer unique experiences—games being more sensory, books more intellectual. It's fascinating how they complement each other.

I used to choose my games and books in a similar way. I'm a bit of a sucker for those 'M' rated Xbox 360 games too - can't resist the thrill! As for books, there's something about a good thriller that keeps me hooked. I agree, they're different experiences. Games immerse you in the action, while books let you dive deep into characters' thoughts.

Interestingly enough, I don't think so. I really love action based video games, but that isn't really a quality I strive for in my books. I love when there is action, but I am also okay when there isn't any!

I think so, yes! If you're a classics lover, you should check out the game, Alter Ego.
