Review of Reconfigurement
“What is your number?” I have often heard people ask this question during negotiations. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it could be relevant to someone’s retirement plans. In Reconfigurement by E. Alan Fleischauer, you will learn how to prepare for retirement. The author looked at every possible angle, from your current job to what you could do when you retire. The book was a complete package.
The first thing that greeted me in this book was the author’s conversational tone. He did his best to say what he had to say in a friendly manner. I did not feel “talked at.” This conversational style helped the author communicate his message in a way I could understand. At some points in the book, he would encourage the reader to leave a particular part of the book if they found it challenging to comprehend. The first time I saw that, I thought, “Why would he do that?” Interestingly, instead of pushing me away, it made me pay more attention to that aspect. If the author intended to use reverse psychology on the reader, it worked on me.
The author did all he could to ensure the reader benefitted from this book. He went out of his way to give the reader advice that would benefit them, even at the risk of distorting the reading flow. For example, in the third chapter, the author shared websites the reader could use to discover themselves and the kinds of jobs that suited them. I did visit one of the websites that offered a personality test. If I was not reading this book to review it, I may not have returned to it as quickly as I did. The author took a considerable risk to ensure the book benefitted the reader. Another example was when he encouraged readers to seek professional advice on some matters, like insurance, taxes, and investments.
The author did thorough research, which was evident in the number of resources he referenced throughout the book. He also researched how to apply humor in the writing. He dedicated special boxes to jokes and fun facts and cited the sources of the jokes and fun facts. There were points where the author did too much with the jokes, though. However, it was not enough to cause me problems as I read.
There was nothing significant to dislike, and the book was professionally edited. Therefore, I’d rate it 5 out of 5 stars. If you would like to arm yourself with information about retirement plans, you should get a copy of this book.
