What a wonderful and fantastic journey the story of Nimue: Freeing Merlin leads throughout both past and present. Ayn Cates Sullivan clearly did not just research but lived in this world (perhaps still lives in this world) to bring us a story that is historical fiction. It truly pushes the reader to consider things within themselves as well as our present world and society. Where will we take our future, and will we as a society return to the ancient ways, similar to what this story represents?

I have always enjoyed reading and learning ancient mythologies and stories that were told before the written language we know presently. This author was able to reach into history and find information about our past that isn't easily available or commonly known and presented it in a story that was exciting and adventurous. The references Ayn Cates Sullivan makes at the back of the book was excellent, giving more detail to the characters and how we, in present day, can appreciate their history.

I gave Nimue: Freeing Merlin (Barnes & Noble Edition) 5 out of 5 rating, which I feel it truly deserves. The world and character developments were included seamlessly with the plot development. I never felt a lull in the plot in an attempt to portray something specific, rather the book moves forward and backward without hindering the storytelling. The editing that has gone into this book is perfection, allowing the reader to stay immersed in the plot rather than attempting to decipher meaning from the author.

Throughout this story, the only part I found I disliked, was towards the end of the book as Nina moved back to present time. It wasn't immediately clear that she had left the past and was back to the original timeline. This confusion, however, did not detract from the story and I was able to move forward easily.
