The book seems really interesting from the review. Learning about Afghanistan before the wars started sounds captivating, especially from someone who lived there before everything changed. I'm excited to read about Nazila's experiences and what happened after she left her country.

The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.

Sun Tzu, The Art of War

The perspective and opinion of someone who has travelled and seen so much is a valuable lense. As for the timeline of the setting, it helps get an insider perspective of the situation before the current crisis.

Once Upon A Time In Afghanistan

As we go on a journey with a Afghan survivor and famil, we as the reader get to see it from a different point of view. As the reader we are able to get a closer look at how other countries (hers in particular) actually experience life and trauma as it comes. We learned that she also married the man her father chose for her. I was able to gather parts of the story which showed that the media does leave out a lot of important information when giving out information on other countries. Congratulations!

"Once Upon a Time in Afghanistan" is a moving non-fiction book by Nazila Sawhney, documenting her family's escape from Afghanistan during the conflict. With poignant storytelling, she shares their journey from Afghanistan to Canada as refugees, providing an insider's perspective and inspiring resilience and empathy.I have been reading memoirs recently and I am starting to like that genre

The author’s personal story of being an uprooted child of Afghanistan 🇦🇫. Once Upon A Time In Afghanistan: The Journey of Hope by Nazila Sawhney shows the reader a totally different perspective on Afghanistan. It was a fascinating sample that is available on Amazon. It tells of the war and its effects on one family, especially from the young daughter’s point of view. The story is inspiring for anyone especially refugees. The review was excellent and makes the book sound very inviting.

Hi @samonology, I was also surprised to read that Afghanistan was a beautiful country and a tourist destination for Europeans and Americans. I plan to read the entire book to learn more about Nazila's incredible journey from Afghanistan into Pakistan to India and eventually to Canada as a refugee with her family. @Mrlefty0706

Learning about Afghanistan first-hand from a survivor would be great as all I've always seen has been on the news. I look forward to reading more about this subject. Intriguing review.

Thank you for the review Seetha. Moving away from your home country and starting all over in a foreign place is both difficult and scary. I have heard about Afghanistan from my grandparents and I cannot wait to read how beautifully the author has described it.

Hi @ Leonie Vermaak, I agree with you and I never knew Afghanistan was once a beautiful tourist destination. It will never be this way again while the Taliban controls it. I am glad Nazila and her family escaped. So many people have died in Afghanistan as a result of the wars and the Taliban. @Mrlefty0706

It is indeed hard to get rid of the horrifying images we witnessed recently, and hence this is a good book to also learn about Afghanistan from way back in the twentieth century. The lesson on being strong and resilient, not allowing self to be swallowed by hardship, is invaluable, as tragedies also abound in life. This is a must-read. Thanks for the incredible review.

Afghanistan before the war sounds interesting and fun to live. It is sad how war can destroy an entire country and leave it's people reminiscing about the happy days.

I like the inspirational reading from someone who has survived atrocities in a war-ravaged country that is Afghanistan. I hope to read and find out what the author writes about considering its the country of her childhood. Thanks for the review.

First of all, hats off to the author who has shared such an impacting and emotional event of her life with us. The reviewer has also done a marvelous job. Congratulations on the BOTD. I am intrigued to know more about what happened in Afghanistan when the Taliban took over the regime.
