Review of Adventure Over Thunder Mountain
Would you be brave enough to undertake a potentially perilous journey to the top of a mysterious mountain? If so, you can join the young protagonists on their quest in Adventure Over Thunder Mountain by M. M. Elmendorf Hopson. Sumi and Mei are sisters who live in a small village in Asia. They enjoy an idyllic life in their close-knit community, often playing with the other children and visiting their extended family of aunties and uncles. All the while, they wonder about the jagged mountain that looms over their valley. Thunder roars from the summit and lightning flashes through the clouds. One day, their mother falls ill, and their parents leave to visit a hospital on the other side of the mountain. Sumi and Mei don’t want to wait helplessly until their parents return. So, they must summon the courage to confront their fears and begin the adventure of a lifetime.
This book has different cover designs, but the Kindle version I read features the image of a colorful forest with a river running through it and snowcapped mountains in the distance. The title and the author’s name are clearly visible in a white font that contrasts with the red, yellow, and green hues of the image. The rest of the book is filled with similar illustrations, which seem to be computer-generated. This children’s book is divided into six brief chapters. The author also included details about her inspiration for writing the story as well as activity pages at the end. The text does not contain any offensive material or religious messages. So, this book can appeal to a wide audience.
As mentioned, Sumi and Mei are the main characters. Sumi, the older sister, is level-headed, nurturing, and responsible. Whereas, little Mei is more daring and bubbly. Both possess an incredible sense of conviction along with the courage of heroes. Like all children, they like to play, but they usually behave and do as they’re told. However, their obedience to authority figures is suspended due to the unusual circumstances. The other human characters play minor roles, but fantastical creatures abound. Without giving away too much, the dragon is magnificent and, despite his size, he’s not as frightening as one might assume.
In addition to the beautiful artwork displayed throughout the book, I liked the fact that the language is not oversimplified. So, even adults can read and enjoy it. I also appreciated the fact that this book teaches children the value of hard work by encouraging them to do their chores diligently. Additionally, the literary device of onomatopoeia was used. Words like wee-woo, pit-pat, bang, and zip added a bit of fun and personality to the writing. Moreover, I did not find a single error, so the text is impeccably edited!
I only have one criticism. I felt that the dragon should have had a name. As a significant character in the plot, it seemed odd to me that he didn’t have a name. Other than that, the story is wonderful.
Therefore, I am thrilled to award Adventure Over Thunder Mountain by M. M. Elmendorf Hopson a rating of five out of five stars. I did not deduct a star because I thoroughly enjoyed this publication, and the issue I mentioned did not detract from the overall story. This lovely book can be read as a bedtime story to toddlers or older children can read it on their own. Kids can have even more fun by completing the activities that the author suggests at the end.
