Just Die by E Alan Fleischauer

This is a Paranormal Thriller with a very intriguing plot. The unique blurb captivated me and I started reading the book immediately.

The story is about Jake Silver, a financial planner, who acquires paranormal power after suffering a stroke. It is not an usual paranormality like seeing ghosts or moving things with vision but a monstrous devastating ability. He can take away a life, just like that, by pointing his finger and whispering "Just die". He was suspicious at first when he accidentally killed a moaning patient and a foul-mouthed biker. But then he confirms his unearthly potential by putting away a rabid racoon using his finger and words. What he does with this miraculous power is the rest of the story.

The author starts the story with a bang. The concept of this unusual power is eccentric. The writing style is simple and easy to follow. I got engrossed in the story easily. But after a few chapters, it started to get repetitive and boring. Firstly, I didn't like the fact that Jake Silver's mother had taught him to whisper "Just die" instead of doing the offensive gesture. There are many other ways to control rage. This is not what a mother should be teaching her child.

Also, I encountered many profane words which might put off readers like me. It also has a fair mention of drugs usage which is not my interest. As the story progressed, many characters were introduced which obfuscated me. But the portrayal of the characters is fascinating. Each and every character like DC and Beth Ann have their own story. Yet sometimes, this overloaded the novel and deviated the story from main plot. After some point, Omar's fandom becomes irritating. I felt that the characters didn't realize the value of life and they were just playing with a dangerous power.

The editing was very good and professional. I didn't find any mistakes.

I kept on reading the book expecting a good ending. But I was flabbergasted by the way the author ended the book abruptly. It left me pondering if there will be a sequel to it.

It's my view that a little more work on the plot would have done wonders to this book.

My rating for this book is 3 out of 5.

The reason I mention this is that an author who goes by the same name as this author, E Alan Fleischauer, wrote a book entitled Reconfigurement in the capacity as a financial planner. it was a very well-written book. I do agree with your review 100%. Also, the characters' actions sometimes surprised me: the way the main hero was sharing about his superpower almost to every person he sees. There is no logic in it. Anyway, I praise your exceptional review! Hope to read more from you soon!
