Review of First Survivor
"First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough" by Mark Unger is a moving tale of his son Louis' battle with neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Louis' journey from diagnosis to cure is nothing short of amazing, surpassing expectations and encouraging hope in the face of adversity. The book follows Louis's diagnosis at the age of three, when the disease had already spread to his brain, giving him no hope of survival. Despite the dismal diagnosis, Louis' parents, physicians, family, and friends unite behind him, trying to find a solution. What follows is a horrific seven-year odyssey filled with hundreds of therapies, some of which may be deemed cruel, but all of which finally determine Louis' life.
Nothing about this book bothered me. One of the most impressive features of the novel is Louis and his parents' unwavering perseverance and tenacity throughout the hardship. Despite the enormous hurdles they faced, they never gave up hope and persevered in their search for a cure. The book also emphasises the value of intuition and advocacy in healthcare, as Louis' mother's intuition led to his diagnosis, and his father's research ensured he received the finest care available. The author's writing is real and authentic, painting a clear picture of the family's emotional rollercoaster. The reader is taken on a journey of highs and lows, from despair to triumph, as Louis defies the odds and becomes the first person to survive his disease.
I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars because it is clearly positive and motivating. It also highlights the awful realities of childhood cancer. The therapies Louis had to endure were arduous and often unpleasant, putting a strain on both him and his family. The novel does not shy away from showing the family's real feelings and hardships, which bring depth and authenticity to the story. The book is exceptionally well edited. Louis's story is a beacon of hope for all those fighting childhood cancer, sending a message of courage, fortitude, and endurance. This book is a must-read for anyone facing misfortune or looking for inspiration when faced with difficulty.
