Review of "Hello HAMMERSMITH!"
“Hello HAMMERSMITH!” by Tim O’Shaughnessy is the first book in a trilogy, which consists of 49 chapters. Gerry and Bernie Stanford, founders of the synth-pop band in the 1980s, die in a car accident, leaving their only child, Jackson, behind. This makes Jackson draw further into his shell, as he hardly talks to anyone. Soon, a turn of events changes his life forever as he switches from graphics design to music composition and performance.
Hannah meets Jack in the rehearsal room, and they form a band in no time with Liam. Then, she gets signed on by ERCO, alongside the band. Is there more to ERCO than meets the eye? Is this record label in any way involved in the accident that claimed the lives of Jackson’s parents? Get hold of a copy to find out.
I’m impressed by Jim and Mabel’s concern and care for Jackson’s well-being, as they’ve become his guardians since his parents' deaths. I like how the chapters alternate between the past and present, including how some of them were named after song titles. Here, we can see the motivation behind these names. I learned a lot about the ins and outs of the music industry. For example, I learned that before an artist or band signs a recording contract, it’s important to get in touch with a specialist lawyer, who will give legal advice concerning the contract and decide if the terms and conditions will be of comparative advantage to the band or music artist.
I like how Hannah dissected the colour spectrum and adapted it to the different personalities in the band. Again, I appreciate Colin’s role in Jackson’s life. He’s what I will call a father figure to him in the music industry. This book is a testament to the author’s knowledge of strings, chords, and music in general.
I didn’t find anything to dislike about this book. It’s an interesting book that shows a progression in the lives of Gerry and Bernie, including Jackson. I only found a few errors, which did not affect my reading in any way. Therefore, this book is professionally edited.
I gladly rate it 5 out of 5 stars. It is recommended for those who are interested in music and its industry. Again, if you want to learn more about record labels, recording contracts, and how they function, then this book is for you.
