Official Review: Bloody Mary Blues by Federico Negri

The story is basically just following a conversation between two people in what is some sort of apocalyptic, dystopian future world. The woman is making a few bloody Mary drinks during a party or gathering of some kind and explains to the man her secret behind where she learned to make the perfect one. It is a sad story she tells, about how she was abandoned as an 8 year old child by her mother on a pirate ship and was forced to use her body to survive, learning to make the perfect bloody Mary in the process of her horrible experiences. The man and woman have some chemistry between them as well, which becomes apparent as the short tale comes to a close.
I liked this story. Although very short, it is well written and I was able to feel the emotions of both characters; I enjoyed their interactions with each other. I did also like the illustrations; whether they are drawings or computer generated I am not really sure but either way they do add to the tale and give the reader an idea of what the author feels the characters look like. Having never read a book with “pictures” like this, I thought it was very interesting. I also thought that because this story is a translation from another language, the translator did a very good job; it flows very well in English.
What I didn’t like about this story was its abrupt shortness. I felt like I was just starting to get into the tale, looking forward to seeing what happens next to these two people, and then it ended. Because I liked these two characters so quickly, I was interested in learning more about them, about their situation and what brought them together. I also think because I was expecting to read a novel, I was disappointed that it was so short.
I give this story 3 out of 4 stars, because even though it is a very quick read, it is well written and the character development is really good for such a short piece of writing. I think anyone could enjoy this tale, which is why I recommend it to any readers. I don’t give it 4 stars simply because of its abruptness.
