Classic fantasy almost always feels safer than sci-fi, at least as far as books go, probably because you're less likely to end up being shot at with scary as hell guns. I know that swords and sorcery are probably more brutal in actuality, but you are less likely to end up reading about planet-killing weapons in a classic fantasy book!
My favourite go to book has to be Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett, but for epic good overcoming evil it's Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time hands down.

i also like when they take a classic fantasy tale and have it be based in our time.
