Interesting Words

Post by TheLionKym »

If you could tell me one main technique to concentrate on which would make my writing more absorbing and interesting to read what would it be?

describe!
emotions, movement, objects, places, people, people's thoughts, etc.

i like to use a lot of color words and similes :D
any way you can find an interesting way to describe someone or something will really capture the reader's attention. like:

before: The stripper passed the drunk on the sidewalk.

after: A drunk sitting on a cardboard mat outside of a tattered apartment stared after the gorgeous, leather-clad gladiator dancing past him.

this line from the novel i'm writing ^_^
its also good to write from different perspectives just to see where you can go with it
the difference between the right word and the almost right is really a large matter. It is the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning ~Mark Twain

I think you must stay outdoors and spend some time with nature, listening to its sounds and watching its movements, it always helps

Not sure about special technique but for me, I try to express my thoughts using only simple words.

First of all consider the purpose and reader segment of your book. If it is for kids and children, make it more creative and interesting by inserting some puzzles, quiz, stories etc. If it is for adults, put more experiences of the people, suggestions and proofs.

Imagery is so so important when writing! It will make the reader feel as if they are themselves experiencing it or watching it being experienced. The next time you are reading a well known, well written book watch out for all the imagery coming across.

You have to be very generous with adjectives. If you want to introduce something, you want your readers to imagine what you write vividly - describe what is met by the senses, that is what is the appearance, what is it likened to, what is the ambiance, the texture, the smell, the emotion!!

I don't completely agree with the commenters who say lots of adjectives and description are the way to go. Unless you're putting out a philosophical treatise I think writing should be specific and to the point. The reason we like stories is because things happen in them (horrifying or lovely or incredible or magical things).

Stories are actions + reaction + actions + reactions -- they're an ongoing chain of events that hint at deeper meaning.

I believe bad writing is "bad" because it's so descriptive that you feel like nothing is happening. Good writing is good because so much is happening you feel like you're going to die if you don't keep reading. Think about the Da Vinci Code. Terrible writing + hideous plot = incredible sales. Why? Because it's filled with action.

If you don't have actions and events in your story, you don't have a story. That's just my two cents anyway :)
