Caleb J. Boyer's debut novel, "Island Games," shows early promise in crafting an exciting mystery adventure story for young adult readers. Over the course of its first chapter, the book efficiently sets up an intriguing scenario that leaves many questions unanswered while also establishing likable protagonists for readers to root for.

Matthew and Ryan, two teenage best friends, find themselves washed ashore on a mysterious island with no memory of how they got there. Stranded with few resources and facing imminent danger, they must work together to survive while also trying to puzzle out the mystery of how and why they were brought to this place. Their budding investigation is intriguing, as small clues suggest something or someone may have orchestrated their arrival on the island. Yet many key details remain obscured, leaving readers eager to learn more.

Boyer introduces the two main characters effectively. Though weakened and confused upon awakening, their developing friendship and camaraderie shine through even in these desperate opening moments. Their distinct personalities—one more thoughtful and cautious, the other more competitive yet caring—add depth while still making them relatable figures for young adults. The life-or-death stakes of their stranded situation simultaneously build suspense and sympathy for their plight. The editing of the book is well done, with no negative points to mention. While the mystery's seeds are just beginning to take root, "Island Games" shows potential for crafting a page-turning adventure story around its central puzzle. Boyer establishes an ominous yet inviting setting on the remote island that begs to be further explored. The closing chapters leave several plot threads awaiting the next installment, keeping readers wanting more.

Overall, the book gets off to a strong start in characterization, scenario-setting, and hinting at greater mysteries to come. With hope, future chapters will continue crafting an engrossing narrative that holds mystery and adventure in good balance. For fans of the genre, "Island Games" looks to be a promising new series to watch, tackling the trials of two friends working to uncover secrets on a mysterious island against the odds. I would rate it 5 out of 5.
