Review of NADEEM'S JOURNEY
[Following is a volunteer review of "NADEEM'S JOURNEY" by Sherine Anniruth.]
“If you don’t improve, you will die in three days.”
Can you imagine hearing a doctor say this to your child? Sherine Anniruth tells about this harrowing experience in Nadeem’s Journey. She bravely shares the poignant details about Nadeem’s experiences with health challenges and how he faced his death with dignity.
Anniruth begins the story in 1989, when she is a young, unmarried nurse. Her supervisor scolds and demeans her for becoming pregnant. Hesitant to tell her mother, Anniruth wonders how she will manage to survive economically and socially as a single parent. However, her family accepts Anniruth’s condition, and they joyfully embrace Nadeem’s birth in 1990. His grandmother and aunts assist with childcare. Without hesitation, they help provide a secure environment for Nadeem and his mother.
The book chronicles Nadeem’s life story as he excels academically and athletically, despite the health challenges that arise. Nadeem endures vision problems and a painful skin condition, but he remains active and uncomplaining. He achieved success in each endeavor, and he openly shared his lofty dreams for his future. How would he face several mistaken medical diagnoses? How would his family and friends help him cope with the ultimate prognosis that dashed their dreams forever? To understand what a truly inspiring life this young man led, please read this book.
I like Sherine Anniruth’s dignified approach to sharing Nadeem’s story. She used her professional nursing background to help explain what was happening to Nadeem in terms that laypeople can understand. For the medical terminology that she needed to use, Anniruth included a glossary.
Near the end of the book, Anniruth included a few unedited messages of condolence from family members and friends. She also included some of Nadeem’s unedited email messages in the body of the book. Anniruth apparently allowed email messages to remain unedited to preserve the authentic voices of the senders. I did not count any of the errors I noticed in these supporting documents.
I found nothing about this book to dislike.
Anniruth’s text in the book is professionally edited. The author mentions her religion but makes no effort to proselytize. For these reasons, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book for audiences of all ages who are interested in reading about chemotherapy and other cancer treatments.
