Photofinish by Cheryl Kerr is a fast-paced murder mystery. Rory Kind, a reputable horse trainer, was murdered after a race while he was caring for the horses. His death was a shock as he was generally well-liked. Few seem to have a clear motive for wanting him dead, and the police believe that it might have been an accident with a horse kicking him in the head. However, no horse was left out. Rory, his granddaughter and namesake, pushed the police to investigate further. Will they find the killer? Grab a copy and find out!

Part of what made me enjoy this book so much was the extensive flashbacks. Rory was raised by her grandfather and learned about horses from a young age. It was exciting to read the flashbacks and learn alongside her. From training the horses and caring for them to racing them, Rory learned it all. It taught her responsibility from a young age, and seeing adult Rory process her childhood while investigating her grandfather's death gave a lot of insight into her character.

There were also many small details to latch onto in this book. I especially liked the inclusion of Nirvana, the pig. The details of Rory teaching her tricks, as you would a dog, were hilarious to me. A pig playing fetch was something I had never anticipated visualizing before. Light-hearted details such as this helped to break up the suspense and heavy tones of the murder investigation.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was a joy to read and was well-edited. There was nothing that I disliked. I appreciated the rapid pacing of the novel and the characterization. The murder investigation, while crucial to the story, was not the only mention-worthy aspect of this book. I enjoyed the range of emotions that were explored through small details, the flashbacks, and the murder. This book is suitable for both teens and adults. It is best suited for those who enjoy murder mysteries or are interested in horse racing. It was truly an enjoyable experience to read Photofinish!
