Michael Reid is the author of the book "The Painting." This book isn't just a novel; it's a plunge into the heart of 1980s Cuba. Based on the true life story of Roberto Ramos, the book transcends an escape narrative, offering a rich tapestry of human yearning for freedom amidst the stifling grip of Fidel Castro's regime. To live a life of freedom, and amount to something, one must leave Cuba and settle in another country. Did Roberto Ramos plan to leave Panama? Did he get the freedom he so much craved?
The first thing that drew me to read this book was that art is a powerful symbol in the novel. For me, art represents the beauty that endures even in the darkest times, and I realized this is true from the book. As Ramos finds solace in the works of Cuba's pre-revolution painters, this reminded me of the enduring power of art to inspire and uplift the human spirit.
The second positive aspect is that the book focuses heavily on Ramos's experience, offering a deeply personal perspective, especially his struggles with his temperament. It's a reminder that it's okay to have temperament issues while navigating life as a young adult. The most beautiful part is that as he grows, he works on it and becomes the best version of himself. It's a testament to the fact that with intentionality, anyone can become the best version of themselves, no matter their temperament issues.
I didn't encounter any flaws in this book, also, it was exceptionally well-edited and straightforward to read. I give this book a 5-star rating for the reasons above and because it's a testament to the unwavering human spirit to succeed in the face of oppression. This is explained in Ramos's experience of going to prison three times because of his desire for freedom.

I’m glad that Mr.Ramos could find solace in the pain in tings that were discussed. Like most American, I only hear the bad things about Cuba. I didn’t realize that some great artists came from there, but I should have. Thanks!
