Review: This Dark Road to Mercy

This Dark Road to Mercy by Wiley Cash is a poignant story about the struggle of a family to correct past mistakes and the hope of escaping the consequences of past actions. There are several threads to the story with the main one focusing on 12 years old Easter Quillby and six years old Ruby who are living with their mother. Their father Wade Chesterfield is a shady character with a shady past, and had waived his rights and has no legal rights over them. When their mother died due to drug overdose they were taken to a state-run orphanage. As the sisters are beginning to settle in, Wade suddenly shows up and whisked them away.

The court appointed guardian of the girls, Brady Weller, is an ex-cop with a problem of his own. He begins the difficult task of tracking Wade and the girls. During the course of his search he comes to realize that Wade may be connected to a recent armored car heist worth millions. Then there is Robert Pruitt who is trailing Wade, seeking revenge for past wrongs committed when he and Wade were minor leaguers. Pruitt is also dreaming of a big fat payday from a local thug for whom he worked as an enforcer.

Cash crafted a story that has tremendous power to pull you all the way to the end. This Dark Road to Mercy is about family, abandonment, revenge and atonement. It is an absorbing read!

I just read this book and loved it. Can't wait to read Wiley Cash's other book. This Dark Road to Mercy pulled me in quickly and kept me engaged.
