Review of Dark Tidings
“Dark Tidings: The Darkborn Saga, Book 1” by Ryan O’Neill is an interesting fictional story that exudes engaging quality. It chronicles Chael's saga. Chael was a boy abandoned on the streets of Kazaam by his mother at the age of six. He was taken to a school by a man known as Khalim, who used this school to train all the boys he bought or took from the street to become fearless assassins. In this school, they were taught to live without conscience and kill for their master Khalim without questioning his authority.
It was in this school that Chael met Darrik, with whom he grew up and became the most feared assassin in the hands of Khalim. Along their path as fearless killers, Khalim was interested in becoming the overall ruler of the entire kingdom. To achieve this, he sent Chael and Darrik to kill some of his opponents and implicate others. Khalim was able to achieve his desire, but one of the ruling houses, led by Anitea Faasa (a woman), was not ready to accept Khalim's leadership. As such, she fled with her children and slaves. Khalim instructed Chael and Darrik to hunt them down with the help of another demon-possessed human known as Mason, who could control demons to fight with him using the knowledge of alchemy. The rest is a rollercoaster of brutal entanglements, especially for Chael and Darrik.
What I find captivating about this book is the journey of Chael, from an abandoned boy on the streets of Kazaam to a conflicted assassin. This made him the driver of the plot and an interesting character to hook readers into the book. Also, the dynamic between Chael and Darrik adds depth to the story, showcasing the struggle between loyalty and morality. Another quality that makes Chael a compelling protagonist is his internal conflict as he dangles between his ruthless training and his innate sense of right and wrong. Another element I so much love about this book is its inclusion of supernatural elements. This is exemplified in Chael's discovery of his unique abilities, such as collecting the souls of dying beings for power. The blend of action, suspense, and emotional depth makes "Dark Tidings" a gripping read, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as they follow Chael's quest for redemption and the fate of the world hanging in the balance.
Overall, the book's intricate plot, well-developed characters, and seamless integration of supernatural elements make it a standout in the fantasy genre. I'd rate the book 5 out of 5 stars for these qualities contributing to my enjoyable reading experience. It has no grammar errors, giving it a quality of exceptional editing. I'll recommend the book to lovers of dark fantasy that exudes tension as an engaging quality.
