“Ancient Beast: Volume One The Beginning” by Kamar E. Baldwin is a fictional novel that delves into the ongoing struggle between good and evil in a world inhabited by humans and demons. The story begins with Kano Brawler, the son of Kane and Julia Brawler, paying his last respects at his father's grave. Kane, known as the greatest warrior who ever lived in the Flame Kingdom, died protecting mankind from evil demons and bandits. Before his death, Kane entrusted Kano with a letter and a map, instructing him to find Master Azura. However, the map is vague, making Kano's journey challenging. How will his adventure to find Master Azura unfold? This quest will not be a simple one, as Kano will need to harness his powers to make it a concrete reality. During his journey, Kano loses the map to the wind and, in his attempt to retrieve it, falls and lands in the Light Village. Here, he is welcomed by a guard named Siegfried, who directs him to Mount Hikari at the Light Monastery to seek out Master Azura. What fate awaits him here? Will his powers make his quest easier or more difficult?

Several aspects of the story stand out and make the book an engaging read. One of the novel's greatest strengths is its complex character development, particularly in the portrayal of Kano Brawler. Kano is a compelling protagonist because of his internal struggle between his dark and light powers. This dual nature adds depth to his character and keeps readers invested in his journey. For example, right after his father’s burial, Kano battles an ogre demon with his dark powers, showcasing his dangerous and uncontrollable side. Yet, he also has the ability to wield light powers to protect himself, indicating his potential for goodness. This internal conflict makes Kano a nuanced and fascinating character.

Baldwin’s ability to create a vivid and immersive world is another highlight of the book. The Flame Kingdom and the Light Village are described with such detail that they come alive on the page. The journey to Mount Hikari and the descriptions of the Light Monastery further enhance the setting, making it feel like a character in its own right.

The plot is filled with unexpected twists and turns that keep the readers engaged. The revelation that Tobii is actually Sono Kami, Master Azura's eldest son, is a surprising twist that adds depth to the storyline. This revelation not only adds a layer of intrigue but also connects various narrative threads in a satisfying way. Additionally, the backstory involving Sono Kami's quest to find the Book of Beast to resurrect his mother introduces an emotional and personal conflict that drives the narrative forward, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

I commend the author for creating such an intriguing and accurately depicted setting. The action and world-building especially stand out, making the reader feel truly immersed in the story. The action scenes are thrilling and well-executed. The battle between Kano and the ogre, and later the fight with Yamataka, the keeper of the Book of Beasts, are particularly gripping. These dynamic encounters keep readers engaged and contribute to the overall momentum of the story.

There is nothing to dislike in this book, and I would rate it 5 out of 5 stars. Additionally, the book is exceptionally well-edited, as I did not find any grammatical errors. “Ancient Beast Volume One” is a richly layered and engaging novel that excels in character development, world-building, and thematic depth, making it a recommended read for lovers of action, thrilling, and paranormal scenes.
