Someone already said 12 Years A Slave, but I just want to reiterate how incredible this book is. The story and writing are both fantastic.

I have to echo H.G. Wells - War of the Worlds and The Time Machine were two of the scariest books I have ever read, and I'm not normally freaked out by sci-fi. If they haven't already been spoiled for you, both contain a lot of suspense and leave you drained (in the best way!) when you're done.
