Review of Autism 2 Awesome
Kerry L. Brooks, in his book Autism 2 Awesome, discussed how his son was diagnosed with autism when he was just three years old. The thought of his son being on the autism spectrum was hard for him at first, but he took the courage to give his son the best life and be the best dad for him. Doctors and experts he met told him to forget about his son and plan on giving birth to other children, but he was determined to help his son live the most normal life possible, even for someone with autism. He started by changing his own thinking and doing several research projects on how to help him. His wife was also a part of the journey, as she went to several autism conferences to understand the condition their son was in and how to help him attain a quality, successful, and healthy life.
This book has impacted me greatly and made me see beyond what the author has shown in this book. Though Kerry was talking about strategies that worked for his son on the autism spectrum, I saw those strategies as strategies that can work for and be applied even in someone's life who does not have autism. Some of the strategies I picked from this book were never giving up, praying at all times, and not depending on or relying on others to solve your crisis. I also found the term resilience to be very useful, and I liked how he applied this strategy to helping his son.
After reading this book to the end, I can gladly say that I did not see anything that I disliked about it. Instead, I was motivated by how Kerry supported his son and showered him with love like every other kid out there throughout his journey. I learned a lot from the father-son relationship that he and Max had, and that made me wish I had the same bond and relationship with my dad.
I loved how he had the best interest of his child at heart and did not mind what experts, doctors, or other professionals who had more ideas about autism were telling him. His zeal to help him soon live a successful, healthy, and fulfilling life was outrageous. I commend his hard work and the support he got from his wife and other well-wishers. Furthermore, I loved how he impacted his son with the things he had learned and how he pressed on and worked harder in his son's best interest to become a better man than he was at his age. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because of the lessons in it. The book is exceptionally edited.
I recommend this book to those who have kids with autism and are confused about the next step to take, as well as to those who want to have an improved quality of life, as they would find it very interesting to read.
