Review of Toni the Superhero
Toni is not the typical superhero most people are used to, but he sure does ordinary things in extraordinary ways that, when we consider their deeper implications, we come to realize the greater strength and glory there is in simple acts of love and kindness. In this introductory installment of "Toni the Superhero," R.D. Base teaches kids from ages 0 to 4 how to read through Toni's everyday activities.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book for several reasons, the first being its simplicity. Base remained true to her goal of making the book as simple as possible to meet the reading and educational needs of the target audience, an age range of 0 to 4. The word choices are very simple. It is very easy to navigate from the subject to the predicate. The entire verbs used in the book were almost restricted to "likes," as in "Toni likes to rescue animals" (page 9), so kids are offered convenient avenues for language learning even as they explore the life of this exceptional boy, Toni.
The learning process is further enhanced by the beautiful, corresponding illustrations of Toni's activities, like when he sings, runs, sweeps, reads, eats, and sleeps. These acts performed with care, diligence, and kindness are highly influential and should help kids appreciate the efforts their parents put into their upbringing and thus positively respond to the cause of raising a more humane, responsible generation of the human race.
I would say special care was put into the editing of this book, as I didn't find any typographical or grammatical errors in it. So I appreciate Base's effort to ensure that children are not exposed, even if unintentionally, to wrong information while attempting to educate them. It's my pleasure, therefore, to recommend "Toni the Superhero" to children aged 0 to 4. This is a wonderful material that offers both education and fun.
There is no complaint to report about this book, and given the aforementioned merits, I rate it five out of five stars. I have no reason to mark it down.
