G. Edward Martin's Truth and Evil begins with a young German man's story at the outbreak of World War II. This narrative follows our main character as he navigates the conflict and the fallout from his decisions during these dreadful years. After making a horrifically important decision that results in his death while performing his duty, the protagonist embarks on an epic journey, with the consequences of his choices evident at every turn in this gripping story.

This novel chronicles the soldier's quest to retrieve a fragment of his shattered soul and attempt to reassemble it. It tells the tale of God and the Devil and how they both battle within each of us, knocking on our doors and pleading to be allowed in. As the main character tries to understand what God wants from him, he is compelled to die repeatedly. Making the most moral decisions is the only way for him to redeem himself when he considers all he has done under God's scrutiny. even if those are the most difficult decisions to make. To save himself and make up for his mistakes, he must put the truth above all else.

Despite my first astonishment, I'm glad I read the rest of the narrative because it was a beautifully crafted piece. God sends our soldier back to Earth after he converses with Him and endures multiple deaths, urging him to speak the truth. Our soldier strives to make things different again and again, and finally he begins to see the devil in everyone he meets. The soldier once tells God that the devil even has a voice like God's, and he wonders why. God responds, "The Devil presents himself as God, so that those who are not of God will remain indifferent to him until their souls pass away." Editing was completed with care.

The interesting facts in this book are why I gave it a five out of five star rating. The novel skillfully conveys its intended ideas through a gripping narrative, likable characters, and a powerful message. Adult readers who enjoy stories that tackle issues of atonement and address the reality of human behavior should definitely pick up this book, in my opinion. Those who believe in God can also find it meaningful. There was nothing to dislike.
