Review of NICO
Nico, the sulphur-crested cockatoo, reminded me of my dog, Daisy. Just like Nico, she is so sweet and seems to never get tired of cuddling and kissing me and making all those funny moves that, I must admit, ease me of so much stress from work. So, this is, first and foremost, a great story for children who love pets and pet stories, and then for any child who loves to read simple stories laced with fascinating incidents and memories.
In Nico, written by Marlene Rattigan, we meet Nico the bird, who finds it absolutely fulfilling to appear before an audience and entertain them with tricks and other funny moves. For some time now, he has been performing before Kim and her friends, and his pleasure knows no bounds, but he will soon be in for some difficult moments. What could those be? Somehow, however, Nico is taken to a new audience where he could perform. Will he find this new environment comfortable, and will the audience be as welcoming as Kim and her friends?
Over and over again, pets have proven to be wonderful companions to both children and adults, and there are, funny enough, instances when we even feel safer entrusting them with our kids. Pets have brought us so much joy, comfort, and luck. So, I really liked how this story celebrates these priceless blessings and memories, first as seen in Nico's home, where he makes life much more desirable for Kim and her friends, and then on the train, where he cheers the passengers up. As I watched the expressions of the passengers on the train, I couldn't help wondering about the personal troubles some of them might have come out of their homes with and how this stranger of a bird helped them feel the warmth and goodness of life.
Kim, her mother, and the inspector are notable characters in this story. Their actions, especially when Nico was lonely and lost, demonstrate the proper way to handle our pets. Pets' lives and wellbeing matter and should always be given the best possible attention. Furthermore, Marlene has done a great job crafting this narrative with simple language, thereby making reading and comprehension easy for the target audience: children. I didn't come across any difficult word choices.
Equally commendable are the illustrations. They gave a proper visual interpretation of each concerned scene. There is a brief note at the end of the story containing some information about the sulphur-crested cockatoo, which children will find very educational. I didn't come across any grammatical or typographical errors in this book. I think the work is perfect—from my experience reading it—and do not think there is anything that could be improved. This book earns five out of five stars for its captivating narrative and rich illustrations.
