Have you ever wondered what happens when you are asleep? Can you let your imagination run wild to answer that question? Steve William Laible, the author, lets his imagination go far in this children’s book, Stevie Tenderheart Books A Second Kiss Goodnight (A Bedtime Story).

The story is centred around a boy, Stevie Tenderheart. Stevie is not happy with how his parents send him to bed early. Most times, he doesn’t get to sleep, and this causes him to make a wish in the form of a note. In the note, Stevie calls on all the animals and makes a special request. He requests that the animals come and give him two goodnight kisses each. Then alone can he be able to sleep. Will the animals come to kiss Steven goodnight? After that, is he able to sleep? Grab a copy of this book to find out.

As the saying goes, in the world of fairy tales, anything and everything is possible. This children’s book can be best described as a fairytale, and the author included quotes from renowned people at the beginning and end of the book that show how and why fairy tales are important in the life of a child. The story was written from the point of view of a narrator. As it says on the cover page, the book is a bedtime story that should be read to kids when they are about to go to sleep. I loved how the narration was funny and engaging. It is perfect, as the story should not be boring for its target audience. I could not help but smile when Stevie described the effect of the kisses of some animals, particularly those of monkeys, which tend to leave peanut shells in your bedroom. I started laughing when he imagined his mother’s reaction if she saw it.

The book is a fairy tale, and it can be confirmed by the number of toes Stevie has. However, as usual in most fairy tales, they are didactic. Within this short story, there are many lessons that children can learn. For example, the book teaches healthy eating habits like not rushing your food and making sure to chew properly. The book also teaches children to accept the showcase of love from parents and friends.

However, there is a deficiency I noticed. The book lacks graphics. There were no pictures or colourful illustrations. The only graphics were cover pages of other books by the author and an old picture of Stevie. The book does not even have a cover page with colour. However, this is not enough to reduce this book’s rating, as the author gave his reasons for this. Aside from that, the story was interesting. The writing style was fit for children, and some parts rhymed, making it sound like poetry. It was beautiful. The book is also exceptionally well edited, as I found no errors while reading. I rate this book five out of five stars.

I recommend this book to children ages 1 to 5. Their parents can read it to them as a bedtime story.
