We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is the first in a promising new fantasy series by Matthew Tysz. It serves to make an introduction to the novel's universe: the Kingdom of Voulhire, a kingdom full of magic and mystery, along with political plots.

The story opens with King Wilhelm, who finds himself very worried by the ambitions of his four sons. Fearing that they might overthrow him, he sends each one to rule in a different chain of islands and well-armed enough to take care of himself. Over the course of time, the lands spiral into chaos and decay due to their constant conflict.

The main character is Galen, a youth from the Land of Princes, where starving and danger dominate. When there is an opportunity to escape from his troubled life, he travels to Magnum Caelum to claim his inheritance from his deceased uncle. All in Magnum Caelum are illusions—its riches and freedom are all so different from what Galen's earlier life had been. With the helping hand of Rowan, his uncle's executor, he tried to adapt to his new surroundings.

Meanwhile, the council of King Wilhelm has started to betray him, leaving the situation in the kingdom very tense. The book also chronicles the actions of Meldorath, a powerful mage whose doings are set to rattle the delicate peace.

What I thought was great was the map at the beginning of the book, giving readers a picture of the Kingdom of Voulhire and how the paths of these characters cross. This definitely adds to the total experience and helps place the geographical context of the story.

Tysz's writing keeps the reader at full attention with well-deserved suspense, and the novel is well crafted. The characters are good and each carries with them a large part of the narrative. The author manages to juggle different perspectives in such a way that the book doesn't feel like a case of switching off and on throughout the book, and the overall experience doesn't feel the worse for it.

The novel is well edited, void of any kind of grammatical errors, with very minimum use of profane language and therefore friendly to adult readers. The author does extremely well in balancing action, character development, and world-building in order to make a well-rounded complete story yet full of interest.

So overall, We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies earns a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. This is truly promising as a start to this series full of enticements, magic, and adventure. Matthew Tysz has weaved an engaging world of fiction that will most likely appeal to fans of the fantasy genre who like well-developed plots and bright characters.
