Review of First Survivor
First Survivor by Mark Unger is the inspiring story of his son Louis. Louis was diagnosed with a deadly form of cancer. At the age of three, Louis had to fight for his life. His parents were suddenly thrust into the overwhelming role of being medical advocates for their young son. First Survivor is the story of how they won the battle against this deadly disease.
The author takes us through the beginning of Lou’s life. Later, as concerning symptoms start to appear, we feel the anxiety of Lou’s parents increase. Mr. Unger does a good job portraying how Lou’s diagnosis affects the whole family including Lou’s older brother Harry who is just five at the time of Lou’s diagnosis.
When Louis begins his treatments at the hospital, the author describes the credentials of each doctor in great detail. He shares many of the detailed notes he took at each doctor visit. I thought it was very effective to have his notes highlighted in italics. Furthermore, I liked that the notes were given first followed by the memories of what actually occurred.
I am impressed with the information given at the end of the book. There is a glossary of medical terms for readers that don’t have a medical background. I liked that terms used in the book that are included in the glossary are in bold type. There is a great list of resources available for readers that are facing similar challenges. The medical background section gives a more in-depth definition of common medical terms that relate to cancer.
Overall, I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. The book is well edited considering how many medical terms are in the story. It is an inspiring story that gives hope to families of young cancer patients. The book is full of helpful information to families in need of advice as they face a loved one’s diagnosis.
