Review of NADEEM'S JOURNEY
Nadeem’s Journey: A heart wrenching story of a loving mother losing her son to cancer by Sherine Anniruth is a touching and emotional memoir. The book details the life of the author’s son Nadeem as he succumbs to cancer at the age of 25.
As a boy growing up, Nadeem excelled at school and loved playing cricket and soccer with his friends and family. He was a kind, compassionate, and intelligent kid. As the oldest of three siblings, his younger siblings looked up to him as a role model. Nadeem experienced a series of stomach pains, misdiagnosed as gastroenteritis, necessitating his transfer to the emergency department. The ultrasound showed that his abdomen was full of fluid, and their lives changed forever.
The vivid writing style and the pictures of the author’s family gave a personal touch to the book. Readers are truly able to understand who Nadeem is as a person. I was upset that several doctors didn’t believe that Nadeem was in pain because he looked healthy and misdiagnosed him without checking his symptoms. This leads me to ponder the what if he had gotten timely treatment from attentive doctors. Could that have potentially saved his life?
There was nothing I disliked about the book. It was a gut-wrenching memoir, and I could feel the emotions spill out from the pages, moving me to tears.
For all the above reasons, I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. The book showcases the unbreakable bond of a mother and her son. The book highlights that bad things can happen to anyone at any time. Cherish the ones that you love because you never know how much time you will have together. I would recommend the book to people who want to know about cancer patients’ experiences or are suffering from cancer themselves.
