Review of Passionate Purpose
"Passionate Purpose: A Global Governance Journey" is a compelling memoir by Jack J. Schramm. Schramm is a distinguished public servant whose career spans 50 years across state, federal, and international levels. Schramm began his political career as an elected member of the Missouri House of Representatives, where he specialized in complex, innovative legislation. He then served as Regional Administrator of the newly established U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Carter Administration. In this role, Schramm was responsible for administering all federal environmental laws in the severely impacted Mid-Atlantic States. Later in his career, Schramm worked as a consultant and was engaged by organizations such as USAID, the World Bank, and other donors for senior assignments in 26 countries. His consulting work spanned various regions, and he provided expertise on industrial policy in countries including Russia, China, Egypt, the Philippines, and Afghanistan.
His passion for public service shines through in every chapter, and his anecdotes provide valuable lessons in governance and leadership. Schramm's writing is both engaging and informative, making complex topics accessible to readers. What I liked most was the detailed and organized entry of events from the author’s life. This clear-cut analysis and first-hand look into a public servant’s life were very insightful. Reading Schramm's memoir gave me a deeper appreciation for the dedication and hard work required in public service.
I enjoyed reading Schramm's narrative about his travels through the remote areas of the Middle East, Pakistan, and India. The sarcasm and humor depicted in that chapter made me laugh. His witty observations and playful commentary brought those experiences to life in a way that was both amusing and memorable. And I also liked the attitude of the author, who never wishes to retire from his duties; he describes himself as semi-retired, working at the age of 80. As for the editing part, I only found a very minor formatting issue with a few hyphenated words, so we can say that the book was professionally edited. And there's nothing I dislike about this book. So, I rate it 5 out of 5.
Overall, "Passionate Purpose: A Global Governance Journey" is a must-read for anyone interested in public service, environmental policy, or global governance. Jack J. Schramm's memoir is not only a reflection on a remarkable career but also a source of inspiration for future leaders.

If this book is indeed organized, then I don't mind reading about Schramm's political life.
