Chaos is a Gift: Leading Oneself in Times of Uncertain and Complex Environments is a leadership guide by Dr. Andrew Campbell and Dr. Ebben Van Zyl. The book is also available as an audiobook. The authors cover the challenges of leading others in various chaotic circumstances. They discuss leading others as well as tips for leading oneself. Additionally, the book delves into the difficulties of leading others through political and religious occasions. The authors use numerous resources throughout the book, utilizing reputable sources.

The authors demonstrate exceptional knowledge of methods for leading others in volatile situations. They also portray a strong background in research through the various sources they utilize to support their claims. Overall, they are passionate about this topic and are eager to divulge their knowledge to others.

The first mistake I noticed is that the chapters are out of order on Spotify. This meant I had to switch the chapter to the correct one six times. There are also two chapters missing from the middle of the book. This demonstrates a lack of editing and reviewing of their work. As for the audio, the narrator does a decent job but is not the most engaging. Additionally, there were a couple of occasions where background noise could be heard from the audiobook, which was slightly distracting. Another section of the book repeated as if the audio was duplicated or was not edited together correctly. In the seventh chapter, the repetition of “competence” and “relatedness” was simply confusing. Although this might be a direct reading from the book, the content did not translate well to an audiobook format.

I rate this book 2 out of 5 stars. The content is important, and the authors seem knowledgeable and passionate about this topic. Nevertheless, the book fell short of my expectations. The book was difficult to follow along with, and there were numerous oversights in the publication and production of this audiobook. I also felt that more time could have been dedicated to leading oneself instead of just the couple of chapters provided.

Overall, I would recommend the authors provide some additional editing before encouraging others to listen to this audiobook. Following a thorough edit, I would recommend this book to those in leadership positions that frequently experience volatile and uncertain conditions. This would be especially beneficial to readers looking for additional resources who would be willing to delve into the resources cited by the authors.
