Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
“We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz is the first book in the Voulhire series, setting the stage for a captivating tale filled with magic, unsolved mysteries, and thrilling adventures that pull readers into a world of wonder. In this story, the Emperor of Lullabies has four sons who he expects to fight for the throne, but they choose instead to divide the kingdom among themselves peacefully, waiting for their father to retire. The emperor, however, is determined to see them fight, so he gives each son a separate island to rule. Over time, these islands are not enough for the princes, and they begin waging war against each other, plunging their territories into chaos. Our protagonist, Galen Bray, is caught up in the turmoil on one of these islands. Fortunately, he learns that a long-lost uncle in Voulhire has left him a forge business to inherit, offering a chance for a new beginning. But upon reaching Voulhire, Galen discovers his uncle has died, leaving only a journal to guide him in learning the craft of metalwork. With determination and some new companions by his side, Galen sets out on a journey to master metalwork and navigate his way through the unfolding troubles and conflicts of the land.
The story isn't just about Galen; there are many other characters, each with their own intriguing tales. Their stories are shared from a third-person perspective, allowing us to explore the lives of characters like the powerful Dalehei Meldorath, the noble Lord Eldus Alderman, King Wilhelm, Midius Maido, Marshus Alderman, Rowan, and many others. These characters add depth to the storyline, making it rich and engaging. Because the book includes so many characters and their unique stories, it has many interesting elements that kept me hooked. It is not just focused on Galen’s journey; instead, it feels like the beginning of a much larger tale. From this first book, we can expect even more drama, magic, and adventure in the books to come.
Overall, I loved reading this book. There is nothing I dislike or want to change about it. I was truly fascinated by the storyline and the imaginary world created by the author. The editing was also flawlessly done. Hence, I rate it 5 out of 5. I would highly recommend this book to all fantasy lovers.
