When Sicily “Sissy” Monroe was six years old she had a vision of her sister, Misty, vanishing. The vision came true when her sister disappeared near a lake during a family picnic. Visions like this, predicting the death of other people, would haunt her for the rest of her life. The visions, triggered by touch, led her to avoiding people and being a loner throughout life. Sissy’s biggest fear was of predicting the death of anyone in her family, the only people she loved. To avoid this she separated from her family, leaving her home in San Francisco, California and attending college in Seattle, Washington. Sissy returned to California after four years away when her mother begged her to come see her grandmother, whose health had been declining, for her birthday. Everyone else’s life in California had moved on while Sissy’s life remained the same. It’s then that she realizes how much her fear has gotten the better of her and hindered her from being happy. But it’s also here that she begins to dream of Misty which only heightens her fear. Will she allow these horrifying dreams and visions to continue to control her life? Or will she finally overcome them and try to be normal and happy? There are so many questions she wants to ask and decision she needs to make, but will she brave enough to conquer them?

The Unsacred Gift is a paranormal young adult novel that focuses on a college student, confused on where she is in life and conflicted with the visions she has been experiencing. It is obvious by Sissy’s actions how overwhelmed she is by the visions and how they have vastly affected the decisions she has made. Sissy is struggling with everything in her life. She is still mourning the death of her sister, and does so alone, unable to confide to anyone about it. She has held a steady job but intimate relationships are non-existent. Returning to California, to her family, reinforces her fears and forces her to reevaluate her situation.

Dorsey created an interesting novel with an intriguing, mysterious concept that was easy to read. The main character and narrator, Sissy, had depth and was fully conscious of her faults and shortcomings. The novel never lacked intrigue and kept a steady pace throughout with layers of the story unfolding at each turn. Realizations about her family and the secrets they have been hiding reinforce the mystery and paranormal aspect of the novel. The possibility of love and change for Sissy provided much needed hope throughout the story and reinforced how desperately she needed to make a change.

Though full of mystery and intrigue there were areas throughout The Unsacred Gift that needed improvement. The most obvious of which was in development and editing. There were moments in the novel that needed to be described and embellished to bring the imagery to life. The lack of which prohibited parts of the story from fully taking shape. Editing was an issue though not an overwhelming one that could easily be corrected to improve the novel.

Overall, The Unsacred Gift kept my attention and I was able to enjoy it. I give this novel 3 out of 4 stars. If you are a fan of paranormal fiction then you will more than likely enjoy this novel as well. The faults I noticed were not severe enough to completely take away from the interesting plot and mysterious narrative.
