Demonslayer is the first book in the Vanguard Chronicles by Ian P. Eviston. In this fantasy story, the city of Crossus becomes the battleground for an intense conflict between demonkind and humankind. The aftermath of a disastrous war has left both sides weakened from countless losses. While Demonarch Yaxus, the king of the demonkind, seeks peace with humankind, his subordinates, including his own son and other arch demons, strongly oppose the idea. They sustain themselves on the mysterious magical element called aether, which is obtained from certain humans possessing it.

As war stirs up once again, Commander Tessa prepares to assemble teams of Vanguardians, each comprising five aetherens deemed worthy to defend humankind from the non-stop assault of the demonkind. The protagonist, Spirit Clayborn, seizes the opportunity to become a Vanguardian in order to aid his sister, Emily Clayborn, who is battling leukemia. Meanwhile, Astaroth struggles as he witnesses his people suffer and resort to desperate measures to survive, all due to Demonarch Yaxus' insistence on maintaining peace with humankind. What will be the outcome of this war?

While reading Demonslayer by Ian P. Eviston, my mind was constantly running wild. The author was so descriptive in this book, and I visualized every scene like I was there. Even as a grown man, Spirit's respect for his sister is a rare and heartwarming trait. His determination to grow and learn is truly inspiring. Despite his occasional mistakes, his sister's love and patience always guided him in the right direction. Another character I loved was Iganto Telflower. The way the author developed the characters is amazing, and I know this to be true because some of them got on my nerves and annoyed me so much. I also could not help but love some of them too.

I recommend this novel to those who enjoy fantasy books. I rate this beautiful piece 5 out of 5 stars because the story consistently kept me engaged, going against my expectations at every turn and leaving me in disbelief at the unfolding events. I also gave it a perfect rating because there was nothing I disliked about it, and it was professionally edited.

I read this novel in the occasion of it being the Book of the Month and I appreciated the sophisticated worldbuilding and the important characters being well-developed for a story full of action and some important themes as well. It's a great start for this series. Thank you for your great review!
