I've heard that there's "no such thing as a good star trek book" before, but is it true? Does anybody know of any that are actually good?

I'm a huge Trekkie, but I've never really been into the novels... I read one, "Sarek," and it was... well, decent. Nothing spectacular, but it wasn't "bad." I suppose it depends on your preferences, and it never hurts to give them a try. I've just usually found they stray from the original feel of Star Trek, but maybe some don't mind or notice.

Oh yes, there are some truly terrible Star Trek novels. (A Star Trek/X-Men Crossover comes to mind). But there have also been some great ones. Not great as in a literary masterpiece, but great as in well-written and enjoyable. Peter David is a fun writer, and he created the "New Frontier" series, a Star Trek saga set entirely in novel form. He has also written some of the best Star Trek novels about The Next Generation. My favorite Star Trek novel of all time would have to be "Dark Mirror" a novel written by Diane Duane in 1993, author of the Young Wizards series. It's basically an alternative mirror universe that is very disturbing and compelling, and a much more interesting than what they eventually did with the mirror universe in DS9.

A Star Trek/X-Men Crossover??? OW OW OW. How was that even legal? But thanks for the recommendations, I now wish to try "Dark Mirror" and perhaps return with more thoughts. (...X MEN???? Ow...)
