The Beaulieu Birthright by Caenys Kerr is a heartfelt romance that had me hooked from the very start. The story revolves around Enzo Beaulieu, a dashing bachelor who finds himself in a bind—he has to marry or at least get engaged by the time he turns 32, or his father will sell the family’s 200-year-old perfumery to their rivals. Faced with this ultimatum, Enzo approaches Iona McKell, a petite, determined woman who’s been part of his life for as long as he can remember. What I loved most was how the layers of their shared past came to the surface, shaping the intensity of their current situation.

Iona, now 28, has been carrying a heavy emotional burden ever since her 18th birthday. She was head-over-heels in love with Enzo—who also happened to be her brother’s best friend—but her heart shattered when during a kiss she thought meant everything, Enzo whispered her twin sister’s name instead of hers. That moment left a scar, and she’s kept her feelings locked down ever since. Fast forward 10 years, and Iona’s focus is on her own ambitions, wanting to establish her identity beyond her family’s shadow.

When Enzo proposes a deal—a fake engagement in exchange for helping her pursue her passion for creating fragrance soaps—she reluctantly agrees. The tension between them simmers from the beginning, fueled by old wounds and unresolved feelings. Iona's wariness is palpable, but the chemistry between her and Enzo can’t be denied, especially as they find themselves drawn closer despite the pretense of their arrangement.

What I found particularly captivating was how their relationship evolves—there’s a push and pull that kept me invested. The romantic tension builds with each chapter, and when the secrets start to surface, the stakes get even higher. The mix of jealousy, desire, and emotional vulnerability between Enzo and Iona was beautifully written, making this story a rollercoaster of emotions. By the end, the fake engagement is anything but fake, and I was completely swept up in their journey.

Kerr's writing style is fluid, with vivid descriptions of emotions and settings that immerse the reader in both the glamour and challenges of the Beaulieu legacy. The pacing is excellent, and the storyline is well-crafted, avoiding unnecessary plot detours or clichés. The characters are complex and relatable throughout the book

For fans of emotional slow-burn romances with a bit of history and heartache, The Beaulieu Birthright delivers in every way—a perfect 5 out of 5 for me.
