Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
I would rate this book at a 5.
The long prologue was a little confusing until further into the book, but once you get into the meat of the story, it was very helpful to understand references made by the characters in the story as to places and people. In the beginning the author gave very detailed descriptions of scenes, which distracted somewhat from the story itself. At first the book did not hold my attention well, but after two or three chapters the story began to draw me in.
The chapters were well named, making it easier to follow the complicated storyline. The progression from character to character was easy to follow and well thought out. The farther into the story, the more gripping it became and when the story switched from King Wilhelm to Lord Eldus Alderman to Galen Bray, the blacksmith and Rowan, his financial adviser, to one of the many other characters, it kept you reading to get back to the previous character to find out what happened since you last saw them. The story involves the conflicts between different regions of this fantasy world which is inhabited by magical characters, both good and bad as well as “ordinary” characters.
Although it is a fictional time, and Voulhire a fictional place, this book made you feel you were there in their world. The villains were sometimes not the characters you suspected would be villains when they were first introduced to the story, but were revealed by excellent dialogue. The intrigue and drama were gripping and the “magic” manifestations by dancing were unique.
A directory or index of pronunciation of the very unique and imaginative names of some of the characters and most of the locations would be helpful to make discussion of the book with others easier as people may pronounce these names quite differently. This book would be an excellent choice for anyone into fantasy-type video games or movies.
The author put a lot of thought and effort into this work in constructing an entire land(s) and characters which, with even an average imagination is completely engrossing. It is well written and the editing was amazing.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and will look forward to future offerings by this author, in particular a continuation of the characters and storyline from We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, as well as any other titles this talented artist has to offer. I anticipate this author will quickly develop adoring followers.
