This work addresses the serious issue of molestation at a young age, which is extremely shameful for human nature. I like the author's courage in displaying her anguish and misery, which she endured from a young age; I am glad to see her so bold. Even though I'm not a lover of memoirs, this one moved me. She has taught me a lot about her experience. The usage of voice, which changes throughout the story, is quite warm. This book will be placed right on my shelf to be read further. Bravo to the author.

I am of the school of thought that believes children should be protected at all costs. This is because they are still learning and need guidance, and at a tender age, the first learning platform they have is the one provided by their family. It's sad when they are left to fend for themselves or make decisions without proper guidance. That’s why I can understand Christiana's position; in her case, she was mistreated by those who should have protected her. This book reveals the abuses she endured and how they affected her. She was sexually abused, and it makes one wonder how she managed to cope. It's brave of her to share her story, and I look forward to finding out how she navigated her journey. This sounds like a thought-provoking read. Thanks for the insightful review and congratulations to the author on being selected for book of the day.

Please don't take it personally, but I won't read this book, because life is hard as it is and, therefore, I see no need to infuse it even more with stories of abuse, death and violence. If it's your thing, just turn on the news to have your fill.

The book provides a first-person narration of the perils of abuse. The memoir narrates Christina's agony at the hands of an abusive stepfather. Why didn't her mother protect her? This question lingers in Christina's mind. The author switches perspective from Christina's childhood thoughts to more mature and refined thoughts as the story progresses.

It is sad that a young girl had to bear all this alone and it is really courageous. I really find this book as a source of encouragement that things can only get better.

I would have wanted the reviewer to expound on the title. The image I keep getting from it is horrible. Why, indeed, are there monsters in the world?

I am avoiding books that would probably make me cry, but I am drawn to make this one an exception.

Child sex abuse is not something I like to read about, but the sample I read was very interesting. The sex abuse becomes a burden to the little girl, something she bears for the happiness of her family, especially her mother. And oddly, there's a semblance of a happy family life around her--numerous siblings, family vacations, visiting relatives on the holidays, etc. Even the child herself is able to maintain her optimism, and her hope that she would be able to take care of herself in the future. But the reviewer says she struggles with relationships as she gets older and is not able to totally escape the consequences of sexual abuse. That's sad, and I'm glad the author is finally able to tell her story.

I wonder how she must have coped with this situation as a child and the damages. I will like to know if she confronted her stepfather and his reaction.

Sexual abuse is heartbreaking, especially for a child. Christina's experience is devastating. Silence only hurts more. I hope victims finds courage to speak out and heal. Congrats on BOTD!

This book opens our eyes to the miseries experienced by childhood abuse victims. What makes it particularly poignant is that it is narrated by the victim herself, allowing us to journey through her life. Thank you for the review.

As much as I like memoirs, ones like this always give me second thoughts because they mostly make me angry, as I get annoyed by situations like this. Being sexually abused by a stepfather isn't something one can cope with, especially as a child, when you might be forced to keep it a secret. I really like this wonderful book by Christina Vitagliano, which will prove helpful to many, and she presents it with impressive writing. Congrats on BOTD!
