I have mine on the shelf vertically, with the unread books at the end so they're easily accessible and I know I still have plenty to read.

Why horizontally? Does it really save space, or is there some other reason?
There isn't really a specific reason. Most books when I grew up were placed horizontally in schools, libraries, book shops, etc. I'm just used to it that way. And I think perhaps it's easier to take a book from the shelf. Never really thought about it actually.

I place mine in both vertical and horizontal mode. But because of huge number of books mine overflow onto the floor in piles, and heaped on chairs and any other available spaces. Interestingly though, I instinctively know where any given book is to be found and can always lay my hands on it within minutes. I think its called organized chaos.

Vertically and grouped together by author. However I own more ebooks than physical books now so they are arranged in a file on my desktop. Each author has their own folder and sub folders for their different genres or series they've published. It is really quick to set up and add to as I purchase. They also automatically save in alphabetical order. This is easier to navigate than the amazon cloud. Most of the books on my kindle are organised as well although I've recently just started putting books straight into a 'have read' folder once I'm finished reading them to prevent the kindle getting too cluttered.

Vertically. Placing them horizontally seems messy to me. I don't like the look of it.

I place books vertically on my shelf, and then stack any extras horizontally on top.

Vertically, by genre and then by size, though books yet to be read lie horizontally on the top, ready and waiting...

We place them vertically and I make sure the spines are even with the front of the shelf. They are arranged by genre, then author. Series are arranged in chronological order. Otherwise, books for each author are arranged alphabetically.

Well I try to categorize all my books vertically and in alphabetical order by author, but, as of recent I have been acquiring many books that are waiting in stacks on the floor. I just can't say no when it comes to cheap books

Oh where to start on this one. To answer the main question, I prefer to store my books vertically. My favorite books/series are at the top of my bookshelf. Those are the ones that I read the most and want to keep the furthest from my three cats and dog. From there, I just put books on my shelf by series and where they will fit. I've actually started running out of space, so I've resorted to storing some books horizontally on top of the vertical ones.
