I thought a theme throughout the book was perseverance. When something wasn’t working out Vanessa always thought ahead to see what she could do to change her life and make it better. She persevered throughout the hard times and always seemed to prevail when it came down to things.

Several universal themes run throughout the novel, including racial inequality, fortitude, loyalty, and friendship. The protagonist's deep friendship with her friend was a stand-out feature.

The theme of friendship is woven throughout the book as Trisha and Vanessa navigate many hardships while maintaining their relationship. Also, the theme of finding acceptance is pervasive throughout the story because that's what Vanessa is after. It's just human nature to seek acceptance from others. Racial tension is present as a theme throughout the book as well and serves as the driving motivation behind the main characters' actions.

Three themes stand out the most in the book. They are that of friendship, resilience and loyalty. They just seem well embedded in the chapters

The story explores themes such as racism, American history, self-identity, and women's roles. The idea that race is no longer viewed as something biological but rather cultural left an impression on me.

The novel provides a glimpse into the Civil Rights Movement and highlights the struggles for equality and justice. Also, the characters grapple with their identities and their place in society, particularly in the context of racial and social divisions.

The book covers a lot of themes, from the bad ones, like discrimination and racism, to the good ones, like the different kinds of love you can find in your life.
For me, the most important of these is the ambition and resilience of the girls, trying to make a career when everyone around them tells them they can't do it.

There were so many themes in the book (almost too many to adequately cover). There was racism, feminism, abuse, abortion, friendship, perseverance, love/lust, and probably many that I did not remember to include.

There are several harsh topics discussed in this book. However, I believe that the best element that we can take from this book is the survival of these characters. To face racism, apartheid, and sexual and psychological abuse is unthinkable, I cannot imagine how someone survives this and keeps their head up.

I think one of the most powerful themes in the book is finding your identity. As hard as Vanessa's life was, and as strong as her friendship with Trisha was, she always struggled with who she was, her past, and her skin.

The themes I noticed were, friendship between Vanessa and Trisha, a parental relationship between Vanessa and Sister Rosalie even though Vanessa lived in an orphanage, sister Rosalie treated her like her own daughter.
