Review of TOM: A life Saved~Lives Lost
Following is a review of the book Tom: A Life Saved – Lives Lost! This book represents the events of World War II as described by RAF Sergeant Tom Hutton to his daughter, Goffinet McLaren. This book begins with the events leading up to World War II, describes the status of the world during this time, and follows up with visits to points of interest and some of the people who helped her father. RAF Sargeant Tom Hutton was a member of the Lancaster crew. On 4/16/43, the Lancaster bombed Skoda Works in Plzen, Czechoslovakia. The Lancaster caught on fire, and a bail-out was ordered. Members of the Resistance found RAF Sergeant Tom Hutton and Sargeant Len Rudkin. The Resistance is a group in France and Belgium that helped to return downed airmen to Britain.
I appreciate that Ms. McLaren was able to turn an academic topic into an interesting book. I didn’t want to put it down. She provided maps, which helped me follow the events of the war and the route followed by the Resistance. She gave dates of important events. She described people who played important roles, like Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, General Dwight Eisenhower, and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
There was nothing in this book that I disliked.
Ms. McLaren did an excellent job of documenting the events of World War II. She did her homework and provided references for historical data. It was written in a way that was easy to assimilate and enjoyable to read. This would be a good book for people who want to learn more about history. I recommend it to people who wish to learn more about events leading up to, during, and after World War II. It is appropriate for all audiences.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was factual and well-documented. I enjoyed reading it. I feel that it reinforced knowledge and it inspires me to learn more.
