Has your child ever come home from school and said they did nothing all day? As a parent, you may assume that their day was like all the other school days before, where they sat in a classroom learning or playing during recess. If you need help opening the communication lines between you and your child, grab a copy of What did you do at school today? by C.C. Lacavera that contains questions for you to ask them to find out more about their day and help them become successful making friends or helping others, among other things.

One of my favorite aspects of this book was the relatability of each of the questions the author asks. For example, some of them are about the senses of touch, sight, hearing, and smell, as well as friendship, happiness, and the importance of sharing. An illustration accompanies each question to keep younger children’s interest in the book. Due to the book’s short length, it gives ample time for you and your child to discuss each of the questions in depth. Parents with limited time can go over one or two questions at a time or focus on a particular question about an issue their child is struggling with. For example, sharing and making someone else happy before themselves may be difficult for some children.

There was nothing I disliked about this exceptionally well-edited book. The illustrations are vivid and appropriate for the questions being asked. Teaching children about the significance of being a good friend, sharing, and helping each other is essential to their growth, and this book encourages them to do so. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars because I found no reason not to.

I recommend this extremely well-crafted book to parents and young children looking for ways to open communication between them through illustrations and open-ended questions.
