Review of adventures of columbus daniel
A little boy used to live with his mother when suddenly things changed. She left him with his grandparents, who lived on a farm. His life drastically changed because of that, and he had a lot more fun and went on many adventures that he shared with us on Adventures of Columbus Daniel by Daniel Lynch. The book starts with how the boy grew up in South Carolina in the fifties and tells some of his lessons and adventures there. Then it moves to his adventures through his life with his grandparents on the farm. The openness of life there created more chances for a little boy to have an adventurous life.
I like how the book shows the world through the boy's eyes. I like how it was back then for children and how it was safe to let them be out and explore the world. I couldn't help but reflect and compare raising a child back then and now. It is becoming more difficult and closed for both parents and children. I also liked the curiosity of the child. I liked the chapter where he had this friendship with the bear and also when he built the raft.
The book sheds light on racism and how things used to be back then. I liked to see how some people were different and didn't care about race, unlike what was common back then. I liked how some good people may make the needed difference only through being normal and not teaching their kids hatred and differentiating between people.
The book in general was a good read. Sometimes the pace felt slow. It might be because of the nature of life and things discussed. Also, in some situations, I would have wanted to see their effect on the little boy. Like when his mom just left him on the farm or when his grandfather made a decision about the bear. Things were told as events, and I would have loved to go deeper. This didn't take away from the book for me. Also, the book received professional editing; I could only notice a couple of minor mistakes. Therefore, I rate Adventures of Columbus Daniel by Daniel Lynch five out of five stars.
