C.C. Lacavera’s What did you do at school today? introduces questions that help adults stimulate conversations with children. The vibrant artwork and sing-song rhyme scheme help spur imaginations along a journey from academic to whimsical adventures. The combination of merry drawings, characters, and literary style is sure to make this book a treasured addition to any child’s library collection.

When readers open the book, they find questions to contemplate. The first questions are about classroom activities. Readers find prompts to discuss lessons in math, music, and art. Then they move on to gym class and outdoor play. Each page includes brightly colored drawings of children participating in the activities. If the child cannot immediately remember their own activities, they can discuss what they see the children in the book doing.

As readers progress through the 20 pages of the book, the questions grow more fanciful and exciting. Little readers with big imaginations are apt to find some giggles along the way to the moon. How can What did You do at school today? help you guide the precious moments of reflection with the children in your life? Get your copy of this lovely book and enjoy a family tradition of discovering what they do at school every day.

This book is as impressive as it is important. It can help parents and children enjoy exploring questions about daily school engagement. Lacavera’s use of beautiful backgrounds focuses attention on the questions. The quality of the artwork is attractive and compelling, especially for younger children who are in preschool and may not be reading yet. They can discuss the pictures as well as the colors they see as they repeatedly flip through the book.

I do not find anything to dislike about this book. It is beautifully written and exceptionally well-edited. I did not notice any grammatical or formatting errors. For these reasons, I am happy to rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend What did you do at school today? for young learners under age 12 and for the adults who care for them.
