"Waterworks" sounds like a gripping spy thriller with Lara and Uri at the heart of the action. The polonium poisoning adds an intriguing layer to the story. The realism in their dangerous mission makes it even more engaging. Congrats on BOTD!

The book suggests how vulnerable critical infrastructure such as water supplies can be to favourable attacks. The presence of a rare contaminant such as polonium highlights how even a well-targeted attack can cause massive havoc if not detected in time.

This book stands out for its detailed and realistic portrayal of counterintelligence operations, weaving technical and political knowledge seamlessly into a gripping thriller. Winnick’s expertise as a professor emeritus in chemical engineering adds a layer of credibility to the story, particularly in the way he handles complex details around technology and international espionage. Nice review.

Waterworks by Jack Winnick is a standalone story. It is a fast-paced novel that gets the reader’s attention from the first page and keeps them enthralled until the end of the tale. Written from the third-person point of view, both Lara and Uri are followed as they infiltrate the intelligence sources in Iran. It is a chilling account of what could happen in the U.S. without the constant counterintelligence to ward off attacks like this. One thing I particularly admire is the author’s attention to detail without being boring. Sometimes upon reading a spy novel, I’m left confused about how we got from point A to point B. This is not the case here. Everything is spelled out clearly in a straightforward language: obtaining new identities, entering Iran, and acquiring the necessary jobs to get access to the needed intelligence.

The mystery surrounding the dead goldfish and birds immediately grabbed my attention, especially with the rare and sinister revelation of polonium contamination.

I just read the sample of this book and it is fascinating. From the first page, you are pulled into the story and invested in what is going to happen with the water that is contaminated. I will definitely add it to my list!

Thank you for this detailed review. Using dead goldfish and dead birds to detect a terrorist attack is quite interesting. I like how you pointed out the author's expertise, as he made the plot feel real, and the storytelling easy to follow. While Lara’s quick access to information seems unrealistic, I’m glad it didn’t affect the overall excitement.

I just finished reading "Waterworks" and I have to say, it's a real page-turner. The author's expertise in Middle East affairs and chemical engineering really shines through, making the plot feel scarily realistic. I loved how the story was fast-paced and easy to follow, with just the right amount of detail. My only minor quibble was that some parts felt a bit too convenient, but overall, I'd highly recommend this book to fans of spy thrillers.

Hi @Idris Abubakar, I just read your comments on the official review of "Waterworks" and I was disappointed you did not leave more detail that would encourage members to read the book. “Waterworks” by Jack Winnick is a fictional story about a terrorist attack on the Los Angeles water supply. Teams of terrorists that were members of an Iranian anti-American group added Polonium to the water supply by dropping it in the water from bridges in socks that they used to bring the poison into the U.S. Lara and Uri were already in Los Angeles on vacation so they were deployed to track down the terrorists and then they were given new identities so that they could be sent to different parts of Iran to gather intelligence and find the terrorist leader in Iran. This is an action thriller that I did not want to put down until the last page. This book is Jack Winnick’s 5th book in this series and all of his books are thoroughly researched, well-written and have kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page. I highly recommend this book. @mrlefty0706
