Review of The Christmas Quest
The Christmas Quest by Harleen & Andrew is a collection of fables about the magic and spirit of Christmas. The fables are in the midst of an epic rhyming poem about Captain Whitebeard and his crew as they sail in search of treasure. Along the way they must please the Dragon Ragnor with their tales, or he will not light their way throughout twenty-four obstacles at sea.
The Christmas Quest is not as simple a book as one might expect. The poem about Whitebeard’s adventure evokes a sense of childlike wonder. The fables in each chapter are richly detailed; the tales stir the imagination. Each one has a moral lesson woven into the dialogue between characters, and the lessons never feel forced. The unexpected twist at the ending was creative. All of these aspects of the book are why I give it a rating of four out of five stars.
Although Whitebeard and his crew and the Dragon Ragnor are a part of the book that will appeal to children, the fables are not all warm and fuzzy. While most of the tales evoke a sense of being timeless as the Christmas spirit itself, some are modern. This is evidenced by references to things like modern technology, and the daily pressures of a modern career. A few of the fables are decidedly adult themed and at times depressing.
There is one reason why I didn’t give The Christmas Quest a perfect rating. Some of the fables weren’t as impactful as the others. “A Magical Harvest” had no central characters. In “Trading Traditions”, the Hedgehog family reads like it is a story about humans. More descriptions of animal like characteristics would’ve made more sense. The tale called “The Funny Guy” didn’t seem like it belonged in the book at all, but rather as a vignette from a modern-day romance novel.
Harleen and Andrew’s book will appeal to both kids and adults who want to get in the spirit of Christmas.
